An HbA1c Test, also known as the glycated hemoglobin test, is a blood test that measures the average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past two to three months. It does this by assessing the percentage of hemoglobin— the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen— that is coated with sugar. This test is commonly used to diagnose and monitor diabetes and prediabetes, providing a long-term view of blood glucose control.

Unlike daily blood sugar checks, which show short-term fluctuations, the HbA1c Test offers a more stable indicator of how well blood sugar levels have been managed over time. It is recommended for individuals with risk factors for diabetes, such as obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, or a family history of the condition. For those already diagnosed with diabetes, regular HbA1c testing helps guide treatment decisions and adjustments, reducing the risk of complications like nerve damage, heart disease, and kidney problems.
